An Oprah Winfrey Special: The Menopause Revolution aired nationwide earlier last week with special guests Halle Berry, Naomi Watts, Maria Shriver, and Dr. Mary Claire Haver. In a community-based, tell-all experience, these women opened up to the audience about their own personal menopausal difficulties, sharing their embarrassing stories and bringing to light the very taboo topics of menopause sex, intimacy issues, hormone imbalance and emotional issues that women have been suffering from, shamed about, scared and lonely for way too long. Times are changing, and the revolution is here. Menopause is no longer a dirty word. As Halle Berry called it, she wants to re-brand menopause, from “dirty to flirty”.
The message was loud and clear, women do not have to suffer from menopause anymore, and they certainly do not have to do it alone. It was great to see so much truth, honesty, sharing and caring happening on the big screen. Bringing private issues out into the mainstream, is empowering, educational and liberating. Menopause has been a taboo topic for far too long and Oprah pulled the covers back on a lot of issues like sex, intimacy, hot flashes, brain fog, heart palpitations and much more.
Looking for Answers
On the flip side, the special made it very clear that there are not enough medical experts out there properly trained in dealing with menopause issues. Women have a very difficult time knowing who to trust, who they can talk to, and where they can get reliable information to help them. They encouraged all women to educate themselves and encouraged them to advocate for themselves and be their “own CEOs” in their health journey.
Currently 75 million women in the United States are dealing with perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, with 6,000 more women entering into menopause every single day. Yet there are not many experts trained or experienced to guide women through their tumultuous journey. And as a result, menopausal women suffer enormously, often getting misdiagnosed, feel hopeless and misunderstood, not knowing who to trust or where to go for advice.
